Issued on behalf of the June 4th Memorial Global Coalition
More than 26 cities in 17 countries will mount an exhibition of 100 photographs commemorating the 15th anniversary of the violent crackdown against the 1989 Democracy Movement in China.
The exhibition is aimed not only at refreshing memories of the tragic event, but also as a means of educating the younger generation, for which June 4th is history rather than personal experience. The cities hosting the exhibition include: New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston in the United States; Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, Canada; Tokyo, Japan; Melbourne and Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; London, England, Paris, France; Berlin, Bonn and Frankfurt, Germany; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Brussels, Belgium; Copenhagen, Denmark; Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; Taipei and Hong Kong; Seoul, Korea; and Bangkok, Thailand.
Feng Congde, Web master of the 64memo.com Web site sponsored by HRIC, is the main organizer of the exhibition. Other sponsors of the exhibition include the China Freedom and Democracy Party, Chinese Citizen, the Los Angeles branch of Federal Democracy for China, and the Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars, which have contributed photographs to the exhibition. The 64memo Web site has to date collected more than 3,000 photographs relating to the violent suppression on and after June 4th, including a recent contribution of dozens of rolls of film by French journalist Louis Frank. These photographs are being systematically uploaded onto the Internet, where they can be viewed through the 64memo Web site (www.64memo.com).
