Chen Guangcheng's Wife Prevented from Seeing Dentist Again

October 29, 2007

Human Rights in China (HRIC) has learned from sources in China that Yuan Weijing, the wife of blind self-taught lawyer Chen Guangcheng, remains under close surveillance from local authorities. On October 29, Yuan was again prevented from leaving town to see a dentist.

At 9am on October 29, Yuan Weijing was stopped at the bus station by the police who had been keeping her under surveillance. She had been trying to go see a dentist, but they physically held her back when she tried to walk away. Yuan Weijing tried to call the police at 110 many times, but got no answer.

Yuan Weijing also called the County Procuratorate but was told that the matter was not their responsibility. Later, Yuan dialed 110 again and was told that police from the Shuang Hou Township Police Station would come immediately. After Yuan waited over two hours, however, police had still not come.

According to an individual surnamed Gao, who is responsible for Yuan’s surveillance, Zhang Jianfu, the party secretary of the local township government, gave instructions that Yuan Weijing not be allowed to see a doctor outside of Shuanghou Township.
